The arrest of the first alleged truck attacker

It is believed that one of the men was responsible for an attack Arson attacks which saw four trucks burned on the N2 road between Piet Retief and Ermelo in Mpumalanga.

A private security company contracted by one of the companies whose trucks were torched on Wednesday arrested the man outside Beit Retief.

The company’s operations manager, Bester Marie, said that they arrested the man in the early hours of Thursday, after an intelligence operation, and handed him over to the police at around three o’clock in the morning. The man, whose identity is known by Sweetan, has been charged with property damage.

So far, 21 trucks have been set on fire in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng in what have been described as coordinated attacks.

Police Minister Becky Seely announced Wednesday that 12 people of interest had been identified through investigations and intelligence gathering with most of them based in the northern KZN region.
