Johannesburg Water has struck the Johannesburg City Police Department (JMPD) to ensure water is delivered safely in Soweto during the 58-hour water outage.
The planned outage began at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will end at 5 a.m. on Friday.
The purpose of the shutdown is to replace and upgrade aging critical infrastructure and reduce unplanned infrastructure outages.
Stationary water tanks have been placed at locations across the city, including Sandton, Randburg, Soweto, Langlaagte, Roodepoort and Southdale.
JMPD assists the Soweto Warehouse in providing security for water tankers to ensure they can safely deliver water to Soweto communities.
“The entity is appealing to residents not to approach critical locations such as hospitals and clinics to obtain water as this significantly reduces the water supply in health facilities,” Johannesburg Water said.
Johannesburg Water urged residents to be considerate when collecting water from tankers, emphasizing the importance of conserving water for those in need.
Mayor Cabello Guamanda and the MMC of the Department of Environmental Services and Infrastructure, Jacques Sequela, conducted monitoring visits to ensure that sensitive areas had alternative water supplies.
