Two arrested for arson trucks

Police confirmed two arrests in Mpumalanga in connection with the burning of trucks.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier General Atlinda Matthey said the men, aged between 29 and 27, were arrested at their accommodation.

“The first suspect was arrested on a farm in Beit Retief with the help of a private security company, and the other in Ermelo,” she said.

“High-intensity operations continue through roadblocks, stop and searches and searches for these wanted suspects.”

The suspects face charges of malicious damage to property. “The network is closing in on those behind these attacks,” said National Police Commissioner General Fanny Masimula.

“The police are excited in the wake of more suspects, which is what concerns the ringleaders of these sporadic criminal incidents. Either they turn themselves in or we bring them in ourselves.”

So far, 21 trucks have been set on fire in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng in what have been described as coordinated attacks.
