  • On 4 July, during the school holidays, the body of 16-year-old Mia Kon was found on the rugby field in HoĆ«rskool Garsfontein in Pretoria.
  • The family says that all evidence points to a tragic accident.
  • Cohn apparently fell while climbing the floodlight tower.

Evidence in the case of a Year 10 student who was found dead on a rugby field in Hoƫrskool Garsfontein in Pretoria earlier this month points to a tragic accident, as she appears to have fallen while climbing one of the floodlight towers, her family says.

Security guards found the body of 16-year-old Mia Coon in the school building on July 4, during the school holidays.

At the time, there was no clear indication of what had happened.

Gauteng Education MEC Matomei Chiloan visited the school soon after, and said the death had been described by police as “unnatural”.

He added that according to Kun’s mother, she was home at midnight, but when they went to sleep, her daughter had slipped out and had clearly gone to school.

Tragic accident

In its first statement over the weekend, Cohn’s family said they were saddened by her sudden death and are still dealing with the terrible loss.

They demanded that the family’s privacy be respected to give them the opportunity to mourn her death with dignity.

The family also sought to put an end to speculation in the media that suspected foul play.

“At this point in the police investigation, all evidence points to a tragic accident,” said family spokesman Jack Broderick.

“It appears Mia was on her way to climb one of the floodlight towers used to light the rugby field, when she fell.”

Broderick told News24 that the family didn’t find it surprising that Conn had climbed the floodlight tower, because she was a very adventurous and fearless person.

News24 has also contacted the police for comment, which will be added to as soon as they are received.
