Four men were killed in an alleged attack by vigilantes in Alexandra on Tuesday after they were accused of terrorizing the residents of Setjuetla.

Community members who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed the men robbed people.

One resident said, “They are known for robbing us. They rob people with guns. They worked in the morning and afternoon. They even robbed people in their homes.”

He said a resident was robbed on Tuesday afternoon.

Residents chased after them. They caught two of those hiding in a hut. Then the two pointed out the other two men. The four men were then taken to a place where they were stoned and burned, and died at the scene.

He added that the residents threw stones at the police when they arrived at the scene.

“They returned later when the residents dispersed,” he said.

On Wednesday morning, bloodstains, bloodstained stones and the remains of burnt tires were seen at the scene.

Police spokesman Colonel Demakatsu Nifholwe said the police had received a complaint of a murder in progress.

“Upon arrival, the members were pelted with stones by residents who refused to approach the scene. Support was called, and the group members dispersed. The police discovered that four men had been burnt to death. The circumstances of the incident are not yet clear. At this stage, no one has been arrested.”
