The Free State Police have finally arrested two men in connection with the decapitated body of a man that was found burnt beyond recognition in Phuthaditgaba over a month ago.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday after police recovered the head from the Namahadi River.
The charred, headless body was initially discovered in a ditch by residents of the Masimong section of Namahadi on 6 June.
At the time of the body’s discovery, the victim’s gender was unknown.
His family then came forward to identify him and confirmed his identity to the police.
According to Free State Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mako Mauvering, when they were called to the scene, they discovered that the victim’s private parts had been removed, making it difficult to determine the gender.
The missing head was recovered on Saturday.
Speaking to News24, Mophiring said it was the first suspect who led them to where they disposed of the head.
“He told us that after they cut off the victim’s head, they put her head in a sports bag and tied a stone to the handles of the bag to prevent the bag from floating up.” [to the surface] in the river.”
Moffering added that they initially arrested one suspect, and the other fled the scene, but eventually turned himself in to the police.
The two suspects, aged 24 and 28, are expected to appear in Phuthaditjhaba District Court soon, where they face murder charges.
“Teamwork between Phuthaditjhaba Public Order Police Unit, Police Cult Investigation Unit, Tactical Response Team and Namahadi Police, together with Phuthaditjhaba Rescue and Diving Unit and Maluti-a-Phofung, all contributed to the recovery of the lost head.”
Meanwhile, residents of Durban Deep near Roodepoort found the mutilated body of a man on Monday.
Allegedly, his head was chopped off, his heart was ripped out of his chest, and his right hand was cut off.
Gauteng police spokesman Demakatsu Nifholwe said police are investigating a murder case following its discovery.
