“In 2019 we (Alex and I) put the (LGBTQ) flag on Mt Kenya. All this crap taken down, I decided in 2023 I’m going back to Mt Kenya to fly the flag!” he tweeted.
A group of Kikuyu traditionalists pulled down the flag that was supposed to represent the LGBTQ community over the weekend.
The group has been collecting money for a month in order to climb the mountain and take down the flag under the name Booi wa Kirira Kia Mugikuyu, which loosely translates to “Gathering for Kikuyu Culture”.
On Friday, April 7, a group of about ten climbers headed up the mountain, and returned on Sunday, April 9, carrying said flag allegedly on fire at Narumuru, Kinye East Sub-County, Nyeri District.
Elder Kikuyu performed the purification ceremony after the event.
They said that the ashes of the burnt flag would be thrown into the river, which flows into the Indian Ocean.
