It all starts in the home which is why the Minnesota legislature needs to invest big in housing this year. Minnesota has a record surplus and many priorities that require more funding. ACER believes that housing should be one of those priorities. We need to invest $2 billion in housing this year and fund the Minnesota rental vouchers I brought home.
Minnesota is in a housing crisis. More than 500,000 Minnesotans pay too much to buy their homes. This affects every county in the state and has resulted in an increase in homelessness or at risk of homelessness. When families pay too much for a home, they are burdened to carry other basic human needs. This can come in the form of education, food, utilities and health care. We need a solution as big as the problem. It is essential to help the families hardest hit by the state’s ongoing housing crisis.
Bring it Home Minnesota, a campaign of more than 30 organizations, is working towards this great solution. Rent vouchers are a simple and proven policy that ends housing instability. With the voucher, the family or individual pays only 30% of their income for housing. This would help working families, the elderly, and individuals provide and obtain a semblance of financial stability.
ACER (African Career, Education, & Resource Inc.) is an issue-based community organization working to empower and uplift African immigrant communities in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. Our communities are well aware of and simultaneously affected by the ongoing housing crisis within the country. This rental support will be of tremendous value to their livelihood.

And to fund Bring it Home, Minnesota, we need to invest significant amounts of money this year in housing. Our state has a historic surplus, and ACER is asking Governor Tim Walz, Speaker Melissa Hortmann, and Senator Cary Dzidzic, all housing champions, to go big on housing this year and invest $2 billion in housing.
